December 12th Statement on the Signing of the NYS Reparations Bill
“THE PEOPLE HAVE WON!”
We won. Yesterday NYS Governor Hochul signed the NYS Reparations Bill. Her signing was a victory for our community’s organizing in our own interests.
It was clear that as the December 31st deadline approached, Governor Hochul was stalling on signing a bill which the NYS legislature had passed in June. At the end of October, she told one reparations supporter who asked her why she had not yet signed the bill that “she had 335 bills to look at.” The community’s response across New York State – phone calls, direct confrontations, emails and letters – forced her to sign a bill which she had not really wanted to.
We must take this victory and move forward in our campaign for reparations. Our community’s mobilization and participation must continue and broaden. We must establish our own People’s Commission to develop “remedies” proposals and lay out how we will achieve them on, not simply a statewide, but a national basis.
THEY STOLE US! THEY SOLD US! THEY OWE US!
REPARATIONS NOW!
