“We are waging the ‘We Aint Going Nowhere’ campaign to stop ethnic cleansing. Ethnic cleansing is a more accurate description of what’s happening to the Black community than “gentrification.” As part of that campaign, we took a stand at 410 Nostrand Avenue where we have been rallying on a weekly basis for the past several months. Our demand is that 410 must be offered at rates affordable to working class Black people. In the months of struggle to make 410 affordable, we have learned that its developer, Urban View Development Group, has over 30 properties in Brooklyn, half of which apparently do not have Certificates of Occupancy,” explained Atty Roger Wareham.
“The second and broader danger is that 410 Nostrand Avenue is a microcosm of the ethnic cleansing of the Black community that is going on across New York City. Over-priced, inferior constructed housing is going up, spiking purchase prices and rents to amounts which the Black, working-class long-term residents of this community cannot afford.”
