December 12th Movement announces Postponement of Planned MTA Fare Increase.
Brooklyn, New York – On June 25, 2025 at the MTA’s Board Meeting Chair, Janno Lieber announced the planned fare increase, previously scheduled for August 2025, has been postponed to later this year.
Every 2 years since 2009, the MTA’s budget has included a 4% fare hike. The increase, if it happens, will raise the cost of a ride to $3.
Janno Lieber indicated “the public hearing process has not started yet making it impossible for the increase to take effect in August.” “The public hearing process and board approval will be initiated later this year,” Janno stated.
The MTA maintains that increasing the fare while simultaneously transitioning from the metro card to OMNY can be “burdensome and confusing” for riders. As such, a specific timeline and the new effective date of the fare increase will be communicated in the near future and riders will have opportunities to provide input during the public hearing process.

The MTA’s postponement of the fare increase is a victory for the “Fare Ain’t Fair” coalition, who worked diligently to garner public support to stop the increase via townhalls, tabling, flyering, petition signing, and motorcades.
We can NOT allow the MTA to consistently use poor and working-class people as scapegoats to bear the burden of their debt while corporations continue to benefit. Therefore, the “Fare Ain’t Fair” coalition will remain committed to the work of freezing the fare in the coming months because we understand that a fare increase now OR later would be a burden for many poor and working-class people across this city, especially in the midst of an affordability crisis.
